BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—The Halal Team of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) won second place in the Diponegoro City Action 2021 Scientific Writing Competition held by the Planology Engineering Student Association of Diponegoro University, Sunday (7/10/2021).
The team members are Urban and Regional Planning undergraduate program students: Akhirul Insan, Al Hilal Firdaus, and Azarine Raina Erwita Putri. The ITB Halal Team's scientific writing title is Smart Disaster Governance: Implementation of Multi-data Sensing in Improving Disaster Risk Management Governance in Surabaya.
Disaster risk management is a framework for humans to countermeasure disasters. The information system is one of the priorities in measuring the regional resilience index (IKD). IKD represents the government's capacity related to disaster risk management.
Through the course on Disaster Aspects in Planning and the internship project taken by several team members, the team chose multi-data sensing as innovation and Surabaya as the study area. "Surabaya is quite striking. It is a big city, but the capacity level (in disaster risk management) is low," said Azarine.
The preparation of the ITB Halal Team started from the even semester break. The team spent about a month formulating the idea. The academic matters became the team's consideration in taking the title. They considered the data's completeness, the paper's availability, and the analysis that leads to content analysis.
"There was studio meeting every night, so we took time in between to discuss. We also spent time to gather above 10 pm, in the morning, Sundays, even holidays," Akhirul explained.
In the process, the ITB Halal Team was guided by Adenantera Dwicaksono, S.T., M.Ds., Ph.D., a lecturer from the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development. He gave much input, especially during the finalization and consolidation of ideas.
Tips for Joining Scientific Writing Competition
The ITB Halal Team shared tips on participating in a scientific writing competition. The first is to understand what will be done. If the issues are related and understood by team members, it will be easier for the team to encounter a deadlock while working on it.
"We look at the scientific writing modules. Some things are emphasized. The background must be issue-specific. Methodology and analysis must be clear as it is the difference between scientific writing and essay. The scientific writing is fact-based and analyzed, while the essay can contain opinion only," explained Hilal as the team leader.
The second tip is teamwork. Each member's interest in the issue can increase the motivation and encourage each other to move forward. The last tip is that there must be a leader who takes the initiative to start brainstorming and lead discussions.
