BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – A joint team between students of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Gwangju University received Excellence award in Global Capstone Design Fair – Engineering Education Festa (E2Festa) 2018 held on 8-9 November 2018 in Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) 2 Ilsan, South Korea.

The team is consisted of three ITB students and 2 Gwangju University students. In addition to certificate, the team also won 500,000 KRW. The members of the team are Violla Tania (Industrial Engineering 2014), Dharma Kurnia Septialoka (Informatics 2014) and Gilang Ginaris Mulia (Mechanical Engineering 2014) from ITB while Oh Minwoo and Choi Kyumin come from Electrical and Electronics of Gwangju University.

The team called “Let’s Talk” successfully won Excellence award for their sign language translator that convert hand gesture to voice as well as voice to text. This innovation is developed to help deaf and mute people to communicate.

Dharma Kurnia Septioka said that the device works by capturing the gesture of sign language and translating it into voice. The people that use sign language wear hand gloves installed with flex, accelerometer and gyroscope sensors.

Impulse received by the sensors are then translated by translating device. “In addition to translating sign language, the device is also beneficial for unhandicapped people to understand sign language,” he said. Besides converting gesture to voice, the device also converts voice into text.

He said that the device had been tested in Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) Cicendo Bandung and saw positive result. Many disabled people will benefit from the device. In the future, he hopes that the device can be used for communication between disabled and non-disabled people.

The team developed the device for around eight months through International Students Joint CAPStone Design Project (i-CAPS) 2018. In the event, there are 21 included products that comes from various universities in the world, such as from Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, India, Japan, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, and USA.

E2Festa is an annual event that display products of capstone design project from universities in the world. The event was first held in 2012 and was the biggest event in engineering and industry in South Korea. In 2018, E2Festa was held by Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy of South Korea and was organized by Korean Institut for Advancement of Technology and Korea Association of Innovation Centers for Engineering Education carrying the theme “Super Challenger”.
