BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Waste is a major problem for the environment. There have been many methods are used to handle waste problems, one of them is by recycling waste into craft materials. The freshmen who currently study the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI) did outdoor class of Introduction to Engineering Design practice (PRD) with the subject "Waste Utilization for Charcoal Making". Located in the area of waste management ITB on Tuesday (04/08/2014), the activities carried out .
The outdoor class was guided by Dr. Mubiar Purwasasmita, Hary Devianto , Ph.D. , Dr. . Yosi Agustina, and several student assistants from FTI-Chemical Engineering Program. In making this product, FTI students were required to hone the creativity and innovate to find raw materials that were environmentally friendly charcoal. According to Hary Devianto, Ph.D., as the supervisor, there were 3 things to consider in the process of making charcoal: burning them, earning liquid smoke, and heat conduction. TPB Students must design it so that there would be less smoke in the process of making charcoal. By using a furnace that has been designed previously, TPB students using a variety of raw materials from the waste contained in the practice area. Raw materials such as corn stove tested, sawdust, rambutan and jackfruit rind, and many others.

They used raw materials researched in order to find the most efficient and to produce less smoke. If the process was done correctly, making charcoal from this litter will be able to save the time needed. Previously, the manufacture of charcoal with wood takes 1-2 days, whereas with this study, it only takes 3-5 hours. Another advantage of making charcoal from waste is the reduction of air pollution caused by burning.

"The reduction of the smoke of burning will reduce air pollution that are harmful to living organisms and the environment as well as it increases the efficiency of production time in making charcoal," said Ir. Dwiwahju Saso , M.Sc., Ph.D., professor of chemical engineering who attended the lecture practice. It can be useful for the environment, this activity was also a new experience for the freshmen in turning waste into charcoal.
