BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The Study Division of the Geophysical Engineering Student Association (HIMA TG) "TERRA" Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held a Writing Training event. It presents the Environment Editor of The Conversation Indonesia, Robby Irfany Maqoma, as a speaker on Saturday (7/27/2024). This event aims to develop students' writing skills.

He discussed how to create an interesting yet critical narrative in writing, determining the focus of the issue before writing, and choosing the right market and media.

He explained that the first step in writing is choosing a topic and conducting in-depth research from credible sources such as officials, academics, and the mass media. Direct observation is also important, but in some cases unnecessary.

He also introduced the inverted pyramid structure in news writing, which is different from traditional writing. This structure places the most important facts at the beginning to attract the reader's attention. Next, the writing framework consists of an opening, body (analysis), and closing. The opening is usually a combination of context statements and main ideas while the body of the article elaborates on the main idea with a focus on explaining what, how, and why. Meanwhile, the closing must strengthen the argument with a proven solution.

Writing tips he gave includes avoiding jargon and technical terms, using active sentences, and keeping paragraphs and sentences short.

"One paragraph is no more than two sentences. One sentence is no more than 16 words," he said. He closed the session by suggesting to always re-check the writing that is made. "If you are tired, leave the draft for 15 minutes. Be humble. Ask your colleagues to read your writing, and also ask friends outside the campus circle to read. Insight from the 'lay public' is certainly quite important," he said.

Through this activity, HIMA TG "TERRA" ITB not only provides practical training, but also builds a spirit of collaboration among students to continue learning and developing in the field of writing.
