BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Students of Material Engineering succeeded in gaining the first winner of the National Metalography Competition held by Indonesian Students Association of Metallurgy and Material  (PM3I) cooperated with the Students Association of Material Engineering  (MTM) ITB. The competition held on Saturday (04/01/14), this was a series of events Metaloscope 2014 which is the program of MTM ITB held for each year.

The members of team were Suryanti Hersanto (Material Engineering 2010) and Huga Fathur Rahman (Material Engineering 2010), they have an idea to test a connecting process raw material in which uses high energy with the method metalography. This method is used to measure quantitative and qualitative research material, such as the final phase, chemical composition, grain orientation, the distance atoms, disturbance, topography and so on. Type of material that is used by the team was steel T22 and steel T91 . This design is depicted through a poster of metalography process entitled  'Analysis on Welding Structure of Boiler Tube Steel T22 and T91'.  In the process, the team would do the levels that applied in a test material such as cutting material, mounting, grinding, polishing, rinsing, and the analysis that is the result of the metalography process.

"Judging will be done to the process, the analysis, and the presentation about research results that done by the participants. The competition is  a chance that is good to apply the knowledge gained," said Muhammad Arfi (Material Engineering 2010) as the chairman of Metaloscope 2014. In their analysis, Suryanti and Huga explained that steel T22 more susceptible to corrosion, and the high temperature strength is lower than T91 steel. This condition is found through image analysis of the microstructure of the steel.

In the competition, the second champion was achieved by participant from Polytechnic Manufacturing of Bandung and the third champion achieved by  participant from University of Indonesia. In addition, the event also consists of national seminar  with the theme  'The Potential of Ceramic Industry as a Strategic Industry in Indonesia' that presenting by  Dr. Ir. Aditianto Ramelan (Lecturer of  Material Engineering ITB), Sopan Sopian (Research and Development Manager, PT Angsa Daya), and Harry Rayadi (Human Resources Officer, PT Keramika Indonesia Association) as speakers. "Through this event, we hope that material and metallurgy will grow very soon," added Banggas Hanistia Pahlevi (Chairman of PM3I period 2012/2013).
