BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—Vice Rector for Research and Innovation ITB Prof. Ir. I Gede Wenten, M.Sc., Ph.D. said the number of ITB journal publications indexed by Scopus in 2020 increased by 302 to 1074.

However, the proceeding publications decreased by 745 to 1025 due to limitations in participating in the conferences in 2020. Nevertheless, amount of journal publications in Scopus increased, followed by the number of cumulative citations in Scopus, which showed a positive trend from year to year.

He apprised this at the First Semester Meeting of the Academic Year 2021/2022, which was the 8th ITB Talks, last Thursday (2/9/2021). Prof. Wenten gave a presentation titled "Strengthening Superior Scientific Culture".

"When we talk about High-Quality Research, the parameters we use are those that are adopted by the world such as publications on Scopus," he said.

Prof. Wenten also showed a graph of the number of publications by faculty/school lecturers at ITB.

Then, he explained ITB's sustainable innovation ecosystem. Based on data, the number of innovation products greatly exceeded the target in 2020 despite the pandemic. Innovation research, startup business, and patents also showed positive trends. "Well, the root is the patent," he said as he wanted to start addressing patent issues.

Prof. Wenten began his explanation with data from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI). DJKI announced that the state suffered a loss of 150 billion because of 7600 patent owners. Then, based on the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK) findings on the 2013 DJKI Financial Statements, there were nulls and voided account patent receivable as many as 8,258 patent IDs and an increase of 16,835 patent IDs in 2020.

He said things like that had been happening for a long time, even since he took care of patent-related matters. This number of patents occurred because the patent applies as a promotion requirement. According to him, patents should not be used for commercial use as there are many implications. "So, the patent is not proper for promotion, even though we are indeed going to strengthen the superior scientific culture," he said. At the end of the presentation, Prof. Gede hoped that ITB would become more excellent in research.
