BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Two students of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Ahmad Kushay (Chemistry, 2015) and Vincentius Michael (Mathematics, 2016) represented Indonesia in World Universtity Debating Championship (WUDC) 2018 in Cape Town, South Africa and finished as Grand Finalist.

WUDC is an international paliamentary debate competition which has been held since 1980 by World Universities Debating Union. This year, 276 teams from various countries competed in the competition held in South Africa.

In English as Foreign Language (EFL)—one of three categories contested—the team advanced to elimination round, semifinal, and the final that began on 27th December 2018 until 4th January 2019.

Ahmad Kushay and Vincentius Michael had previously competed in a national debate competition series “National University Debating Championship (NUDC)” on 15-21 August 2018. They succesfully won the 2nd place after competing with 112 teams. As an apreciation, Kemenristekdikti sent them as Indonesia representatives in international level.

“I am personally interested with parliamentary debate and I want to bring fame to ITB in national and international level,” said Kushay. He is also motivated because of his interest in intellectual discussion on social issues.

The format is different with conventional British Parliamentary debate. Here, four teams consisting of two persons each debate a motion which requires wide insight and good cooperation. “In order to face this competition, we make several preparations. To widen our insight, we read various articles on magazines and other mass media such as The Economist, The Atlantic, Aeon, New York Times, etc,” said Kushay.

They also practiced other essentials such as speaking, communication, and teamwork. With two teams each taking opposition and proposition, it is particularly difficult to prove their arguments as the best ones.

Nevertheless, they succeeded on dealing with the opposing team and advance to the final, together with three other teams. Eventhough they did not go home as the Champion, Kushay said that the competition is an indispensable experience and will be beneficial in the future.
