BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — Elnaya Mahadevi Pilian (TL’19), a student of the Undergraduate Program in Environmental Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung, returned to Indonesia this past Saturday (22/7/2023) after participating in a three-week-long student sharing program at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The program, organized by the prestigious philanthropic institution Temasek Foundation in Singapore, is part of a grand effort to support education and ASEAN youth.

Approximately 60 students from various higher institutions in ASEAN, including Elnaya representing ITB, were selected for this fully funded scholarship program, covering accommodation, travel, meals, and even souvenirs. Elnaya remarked in a recent interview, "Everything, even the souvenirs, were covered by them. That’s how much they value education and knowledge exchange among these youths.

"The student sharing program included engaging activities, such as a class in sustainable policy. Elnaya emphasized, "Moreover, this program not only revolved around exchanging aspirations, but we also sought solutions for the environmental challenges in ASEAN. It’s a great opportunity."

According to Elnaya, this rare opportunity helps participants, including herself, grow as future leaders. Throughout the program, participants from various countries were randomly assigned into groups. Elnaya's group focused on the issue of sustainable tourism in Vietnam, developing a plan to implement sustainable tourism by 2040. Sessions were evaluated by adjudicators, experts in sustainable policy, and Elnaya and her team earned an achievement, enriching their experience at NUS.

One of the most memorable aspects for Elnaya was the extraordinary experience offered throughout the program. She had the opportunity to learn from brilliant NUS professors, including Professor Melissa Lou, a research fellow in the field of climate change policy and behavioral economics. Another notable figure was the Head of the Singaporean Parliament, who shared inspiring insights.

Elnaya emphasized that participating in such a program is not merely about the learning experience but also about the opportunity to contribute. "It’s not about what you can learn, but it is about what you can give. People abroad will embrace your ideas if that’s really what they are looking for," she expressed during the interview. She encouraged students to feel proud of representing their countries and institutions of origin.

Elnaya also asserted that to obtain such an exclusive opportunity, one must be diligent in seeking information and inquire with related parties, including the International Relations Office (IRO) at ITB. Despite facing multiple failures in securing fully-funded scholarships, her efforts finally came to fruition through this program. "Here's my take: don't be shy to ask around. Stay active and reach out to the International Relations Office," she stated.

To conclude the interview session, Elnaya left a message for her fellow students to adopt a mindset of international exposure as a means to learn and develop further. "Maintain the mindset that when we travel, we represent ITB and Indonesia; ensure that your primary objective is solely focused on learning."
