BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Four students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Brenda Sintia (Aerospace Engineering 2022), Nadia Pradipa Dianti (Aerospace Engineering 2023), Muhamad Rafli Parindang (Mechanical Engineering 2023), and Muhammad Brilian Akbar (Mechanical Engineering 2023), received the Best Presenter award at the 2024 International Conference on Aerospace Electronics and Remote Sensing Technology (ICARES).

The event was held on Friday, November 8, 2024, at the 7th Floor Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and via Zoom. ICARES serves as a platform for academics to publish their discoveries and research in the field of Aerospace and Satellite technology through research papers.

Inspired by the dimples on a golf ball, the ITB team aimed to optimize the shape of dimples to reduce drag forces on aircraft wings.

On an aircraft wing, there is a type of drag called pressure drag, which occurs due to the detachment of the boundary layer from the wing surface. In theory, vortex generators create small vortices that generate turbulent kinetic energy, allowing the boundary layer to remain attached to the surface and reducing drag.

“Our research shows a reduction in drag by 4.461%, which is considered significant if applied to commercial aircraft wings. This reduction in drag will certainly reduce fuel consumption, providing both environmental and economic benefits,” said Brilian.

The team's interest in participating in this conference stemmed from Brenda’s routine of reading many journals. This led to the desire to start research and publish a journal. The preparation process began in June with topic selection, followed by a literature study on dimples. Being part of the Aksantara unit made it easy for Brenda to find teammates for the research. After being selected on October 7, the team began preparing their presentation and planning their trip to Yogyakarta.

According to the team, the strategy for conducting effective research is ensuring proper structure and workflow.

“Research is an activity that involves not only technical skills but also the ability to organize the entire process. We created a clear workflow, prepared a timeline for each testing phase, a draft outline for the paper, and revisions to be made,” said Rafli.

Furthermore, they emphasized that the commitment of each team member was crucial to ensuring the successful completion of the research. Despite each member’s busy schedule, their discipline in managing time allowed the team to successfully navigate each stage and emerge as the best presenter.

Finally, the ITB team encouraged their peers not to be afraid of creating and always be consistent in trying.

“Stick with your idea and trust yourself, even if others think your idea is unreasonable. Stay firm and prove them wrong. When you believe in yourself, that’s when you’ve already won,” said Nadia.

“Lastly, we would like to thank Mr. Yohanes Bimo Dwianto, our advisor, Kak Angka Bayu Putranto for his support in this research, as well as our friends Aniket, Nopal, FK, Dzakwaan, and Kak Tiyan who accompanied us in Yogyakarta. Most importantly, we would like to thank Aksantara for providing us with a platform to create,” Brenda concluded.
