YOGYAKARTA, itb.ac.id - ITB students once again showed their wits in a national competition. Widi Januar Pratama (Urban and Regional Planning 2012), Hasna Anisa Muthia (Environmental Engineering 2012), and Noviani Ima Wantoputri (Environmental Engineering 2012) snatched the first prize in Gadjah Mada City Festival (FESTAGAMA) 2016 on Tuesday through Thursday (03-05/05/2016) at the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM). Along with the other chosen five teams from hundreds of other teams that submitted their proposals, they presented their paper entitled "Adaptation of Green Infrastructure Concept to Improve Urban Life Quality towards Eco City" which was submitted under the subtheme of Healthy Environment.
Under the supervision of Ir. Yuniati Z. Azzaino, M.Sc. (ITB Environmental Engineering lecturer), they spent two weeks to prepare for the competition. The idea originated from their undergraduate theses they were currently working on. "I took Research Methodology class and it happened to be about infrastructure. The class required me to take some data in Siliwangi campus which is why we could progress fast. We used the data I acquired," Widi said. Incidentally, Hasna also took a course themed eco-city. They integrated their knowledge and developed their idea in a relatively short time.

The green infrastructure concept they proposed was intended to conserve environment and to start a sustainable development. The system that was written onto a twenty-five-page document consisted of 6 components, which were sustainable urban drainage system that manipulates drainages to convert water to be more environmentally friendly, rain garden which is a catchment basin, rain water harvesting, bio filter which processes domestic wastes, organic waste and inorganic waste, and urban farming which plants empty fields in urban areas with economical crops.

Widi, Hasna, and Ima admitted that they had only finished their presentation slides one day before competing. Although they only started practicing once they arrived in Yogyakarta, the proposal that they presented to the Yogyakarta provincial government and UGM Urban and Regional Planning board of experts won the judges' hearts. "I think the other groups' topics were not bad, but they did not really consider whether or not their cases were feasible. On the other hand, I'm confident that my idea will be able to be implemented in a short notice any time," Widi explained. When asked about the future progress of the paper, Ima did not have a definite answer. However, one of the judges asked them to present their idea to the city's mayor.
