Nobel Prize of Medicine, Prof. Harald zur Hausen, Give Lecture at ITB

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - the 2008 Nobel laureate in medicine, Prof. Harald zur Hausen, took a visit to ITB on Monday-Tuesday (27-28/02/12). Prof. Harald's visit performed in the framework of the International Conference on Biomedical Science 2012, held by the School of Biological Science and Technology (SITH) ITB.

At the conference, Prof. Harald had the opportunity to share knowledge and practiced knowledge about the virus that causes cervical cancer. This Professor emeritus of German is a person who first discovered the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is believed to be a virus that causes cervical cancer.

In his presentation, he explained that cervical cancer is actually preventable diseases. "Prevention is very important because HPV infections are asymptomatic in the beginning, but we feel after 15 to 20 years later when the condition is severe," he said.

One way to prevent cervical cancer by vaccination is to reduce the risk of cervical cancer by 70-80%. "Vaccination can be performed on women or men even someone who is aged 9 to 14 years. Please note that men also play a role in bringing this virus," he added.

The Inventor of HPV

Prof. Harald zur Hausen was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on March 11, 1936. He completed his doctor of education at the Universities of Bonn and received his doctorate from the University of Dusseldorf in 1960.

In 1976, he made the hypothesis that HPV plays a role in causing cervical cancer. The study continued when he successfully developed the HPV vaccine in 2006. Two years after that, precisely in 2008, Prof. Harald received the Nobel Prize in Medicine as a figure who first discovered the HPV virus that causes cervical cancer.

Until now, Professor. Harald continued doing research related to the viruses that cause disease. One study that is being practiced is about colon cancer and leukemia, particularly about the virus that causes the disease.
