BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Studium Generale KU4078 Institut Teknologi Bandung presented Amr J. Qari as Principal Infrastructure Specialist from the Asian Development Bank, Wednesday (7/10/2020). In the guest lecture, he talked a lot about preventing financial risks in times of pandemics like today. Amr J. Qari started the public lecture with an explanation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). ADB was founded in 1966 as a regional multilateral bank. Currently, ADB has 60 countries registered as members. Of the 60 countries, Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest shareholding in ADB.
“ADB's main business is providing loan funds to member countries. In addition, ADB also provides technical assistance, legal advice, capacity building support and investment in the private sector and this is what differentiates ADB from other lending banks. In its implementation, ADB has a vision, namely to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asian and the Pacific, "he said.
ADB currently has a long-term strategic priority called Strategy 2030 which is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals where disaster resilience is included in these priorities. From a financial perspective, developing countries that are members of ADB are losing nearly $ 94 million per day due to the disaster.
Amr said that in Indonesia currently there are still many gaps in disaster management. One of them is the lack of preparation for the community to face disasters. He gave an example of how Japan is very good at preparing its people for disasters, one of which is by preparing children from school.
Until now, ADB has contributed a lot in assisting disaster management in Indonesia. One of them is through the post-disaster liquefaction rehabilitation and reconstruction in Palu, Central Sulawesi. In its reconstruction, ADB uses the Build Back Better approach, which is how the aspects of resilience are considered when planning and rebuilding, including selecting suitable building materials. In addition, ADB also uses the latest technology, namely using satellite imagery to map disaster-prone areas in Palu.
At the end of the session Amr shared with the students how to survive in the current pandemic conditions. Among them, namely maintaining mental and physical health through meditation, using the available time to get to know yourself better, including the values ??and principles of life that are believed to be and it is important to choose a job that does not conflict with the values ??of life that are believed.
"Take risks, put your self out of your comfort zone, embarrassment in front of a lecturer is easier than being embarrassed in front of colleagues," said Mr. Amr at the end of the session. The public lecture opened by Dr. G. Prasetyo Adhitama S.Sn., M.Sn., as the Director of Student Affairs with the moderator Sonny Rustiadi, MBA, Ph.D., as a lecturer at SBM ITB.
