BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—The location of Bosscha Observatory is ideal for observing extraterrestrial objects, as mentioned by the Head of the Indonesia Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ir. Satryo. S. Brodjonegoro during the 100th Anniversary of Bosscha Observatory on Monday (30/1/2023).

In his presentation, Prof. Satryo explained that Bosscha Observatory was located just below the equator, giving it many advantages for performing space observation. Researchers who conduct their studies there can get a broader scope of observation for more data and better results.

“The location of this observatory is perfect. In fact, it is not uncommon for many astronomers abroad to wish to study here,” Prof. Satryo said.

Prof. Satryo said that the observatory has reached the age of 100 years. It is an accomplishment that the facility is still running, and he believes that its contribution to the people of Indonesia was astronomical. Hence, the designation of Bosscha Observatory as a cultural heritage must not be contested despite its environment being no longer as natural as it used to be.

“I am sure that his place has made many great contributions, but the challenges ahead will be more difficult and complex. The road will not be easy. One of the problems that this place will face is the increasing amount of light pollution. The rise in light pollution may cause the functional purpose of the observatory to be hampered due to the declining accuracy of the data produced,” he explained.

Because of the arising issues that may endanger the operation of the observatory, Prof. Satryo advised that synergy from all parties is crucial in maintaining environmental sustainability around it. “A nation can be deemed as advanced if it has serious concerns for science and knowledge,” he emphasized. “Investing in the world of science does not cause any losses, although it may take a long time to achieve the benefits.”

“Focusing on efforts to develop science cannot be judged only from the economic side. In order to develop a country, one must put science as their basis in their policies,” Prof. Satryo added.

Prof. Satryo expressed his gratitude to all the people who supported the operation of Bosscha Observatory to this day. With the support given by the people of Indonesia, he hoped that Bosscha Observatory could carry on and improve its contributions to the country's welfare.
