BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The SHA-587 Team, consisting of three Informatics Engineering students of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) achieved remarkable success by securing 2nd place in the Capture the Flag (CTF) competition in the Techcomfest event hosted by Politeknik Negeri Semarang. This activity consists of a preliminary round (on 20/12/2023) and a final round (on 20/1/2024) in which students from all over Indonesia participated.
This achievement shows the commitment and excellence of the undergraduate students of Informatics Engineering ITB, especially in facing information technology security challenges. This achievement is an inspiration for other students to continue in developing their abilities and excel at national and international levels.Capture the Flag (CTF) is a type of hacking competition that tests participants' skills in retrieving a hidden ‘flag’ in a system. At the Techcomfest 2024, CTF is held in a jeopardy format. It means the organizer provides a ‘service’ and participants must attack it by completing challenges to get a text called a ‘flag’, which is then converted into points.
Moch. Sofyan Firdaus, Akmal Mahardika Nurwahyu Pratama, and Muhammad Haidar Akita Tresnadi managed to win this competition by completing the 0day challenge, which refers to a vulnerability in a program that was recently discovered and has not been reported.
“Our final points was identical to that of the team that won 1st place, totaling 1069 points. However, due to our slower performance, we ended up securing 2nd place," said one of the team members, Moch. Sofyan Firdaus.
Sofyan explained that competition in CTF is very technical and requires practical skills in addition to theoretical knowledge. They have trained through previous experience of participating in CTF competitions at both national and international levels.
"I regularly participate in one to two international CTF events every weekend through an Indonesian CTF community called TCP1P," said Sofyan. Armed with this experience, the SHA-587 team gained achievements at the CTF Techcomfest 2024.
Sofyan expressed his happiness as this marked the second achievement of the SHA-587 team representing ITB in the CTF competition. He hopes that various stakeholders will pay closer attention to the players and CTF itself. "Hopefully one day ITB can host a national level CTF competition," said Sofyan.
