ITB Becomes Host of International Textile Conference

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - This year, ITB Textile Design of the Craft Design study program has received the opportunity to become the partner of international textile organizations Ars Textrina (University of Leeds, England) and Costume Culture Association (Korea) in holding the International Textile and Costume Conference which will run on Monday - Wednesday (24-26/10/11). The conference, entitled "Heritage Textiles and Costumes" this time, consists of a seminar which will be held in the ITB campus and an exhibition taking place in Lawangwangi Art and Science Center.
According to the chief organizer, Prof. Dr. Biranul Anas, in the press conference on Thursday (19/10/11), Bandung was chosen as the host city because Bandung can be considered the capital city of Indonesia's textile industry, whereas 70% of the textile industry is located in Bandung and its surrounding. Also, it is in Bandung that the first textile institution of higher learning in Indonesia was found, namely the College of Textile Technology (Sekolah Tinggi Teknologi Tekstil).
"The modern textile industry in Indonesia hasn't quite reached the level of creative industry, but instead a job order industry," stated the ITB Textile Craft lecturer. One of the expected outputs from the presence of this conference is that there will be further actions in concepting the development of Indonesia' textile industry in the future.
Involving Textile Experts, Practitioners, and Students
It is hoped that the international seminar can become a medium to accomodate the results of researches in the field of textile including on raw materials, dyeing process, production process, application, traditional and modern techniques, and the development of costume and fashion at present. Involving the textile experts, practitioners and students from Indonesia and other countries, the seminar also aims to encourage the spirit for research for all groups, both institutes of higher learning or research organizations along with international-level quality textile industries. There will be six speakers seasoned in the domain of international textile and 25 research papers and recent textile news presented in the seminar.
The exhibition for this year's congress consists of both fashion and poster exhibitions. Participants of the fashion exhibition hails from seven countries, which are Korea, China, Japan, Israel, Phillipines, United States of America, and Indonesia. The various works on display are textile and costumes containing traditional values both from the form or the technique of the textile, such as the usage of hooks, weaving, knitting, embroidery, and others.
Held during 24-25 October 2011, this exhibition will also display the works of top-notch Indonesian designers such as Barli Asmara, Tuty Cholid, Josephine Komara, and Denny Wirawan. Meanwhile, the poster exhibition will contain expositions on 71 results from the researches of experts and academicians working in textile and other related fields. The poster exhibition will take place in the East Campus Center of the ITB campus on 25-26 October 2011.
