BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Geological Engineering Student Association (HMTG) "GEA" ITB hosted the second session of the Geology Student Competition (GSC) Talks on Saturday, June 15, 2024, via Zoom. This virtual event featured two inspirational ITB Geological Engineering alumni: Vincent Setiawan, a Cost Engineer, and Arifin, a Doctor of Hydrogeology from University College London. They provided comprehensive insights into studying abroad, focusing on their personal experiences and career opportunities.
Vincent, who earned his Master’s in Environment and Energy Management from the University of Twente in the Netherlands, shared his journey of studying in Europe. He highlighted how a Master's degree from abroad can significantly enhance one's competitiveness in the job market, particularly with multinational companies. Proficiency in English, he noted, is a crucial asset for communicating effectively with international colleagues and investors.
He offered valuable advice for prospective international students, emphasizing the importance of early English language proficiency. “The sooner you master English, the greater your chances of succeeding in your studies and international career,” he remarked.
Vincent also underscored the growing importance of data analytics in modern geology. He recommended that students acquire skills in data processing using tools like Python and GIS.
Moreover, he encouraged taking advantage of student exchange programs. "Experiencing and interacting abroad can greatly improve your chances of being accepted into foreign universities," he elaborated.
Additionally, Vincent stressed the value of participating in community service activities, as such experiences can enhance scholarship applications. He also advised networking with alumni, using platforms like LinkedIn to connect with mentors who can provide guidance.
Arifin, who is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at UCL, focused on his journey of securing an LPDP scholarship and studying in the UK. He emphasized the importance of perseverance and not giving up despite facing rejections. Arifin outlined the LPDP selection process, which includes three stages: Document Screening, Scholastic Selection, and Interview Selection.
Arifin also highlighted the benefits of the LPDP scholarship, which covers tuition fees, living expenses, transportation, and health insurance. He assured that the funds provided by LPDP are more than sufficient to support overseas studies.
“Almost half of LPDP alumni work as academics or researchers,” Arifin stated. “LPDP promotes career development across various fields, including government, professional sectors, and entrepreneurship,” he added.
Both speakers conveyed that studying abroad is not just about obtaining a degree but also about life experiences, personal growth, and building a brighter future.
They encouraged attendees to never give up on their dreams and to keep learning and growing.
