BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - At least 140 liters of blood have been donated by ITB students up to October of this year. The blood was obtained from various blood drives held on ITB's campus.

Take today, Tuesday (26/10/10), for example. A blood drive is being held by the student associations in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Faculty in cooperation with the Bandung chapter of Palang Merah Indonesia (Red Cross Indonesia). 80 bags containing 350 cc of blood each were donated in this event, held in the Benny Subianto building.

Last February, for two days the committee of ITB Fair also held a blood drive. In this event, the donors came from not only ITB but also from the public. Hundreds of people came to donate blood.

Late last March, the student associations of Industrial Engineering, Oil Engineering, Chemistry, Geodesy, Geology, and Geophysics also held a similar event. 103 people signed up, although not all of them passed the requirements needed to become a blood donor.

There were also routine blood drives held every three months called the four building blood drive. The blood drive was held by the student associations located in the Benny Subianto, T. P. Rahmat, Yusuf Panigoro, and Achmad Bakrie Building, namely the student associations of Informatics Engineering, Physics Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Pharmacy, and Electrical Engineering. In each blood drive, the amount of blood donated was around 100 bags of blood. This year, the event has been held twice, in March and July.

Those are a number of blood drives this year recorded by Kantor Berita. Assuming that 80 bags of 350 cc of blood were donated at each event, ITB students have donated 140 liters of blood.

These blood drives are highly appreciated by ITB students. Other than the altruistic act, blood donor generally realize the benefits they gain from donating blood.

"It's better than giving it to the mosquitoes," said a donor playfully.
