JAKARTA, itb.ac.id-Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) will host the 2015 International Student Energy Summit (ISES) which will be held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center on June 10-13. The theme of the upcoming conference is "Connecting the Unconnected" which addresses the gap between the development and usage of energy in the developed and developing countries and the efforts needed to reduce the gap. The event, which attracts more than 800 participants from around 100 countries, will also discuss energy security and sustainability as well as environmental issues. Similar to the previous events, the ISES 2015 is expected to be inaugurated by the President of Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

The event consists of various programs, namely conferences, workshops, student competitions, field trip, and numerous social events. ISES is a two-year event initiated by Student Energy, a global nonprofit organization aims to create a global movement driven by young people to promote energy sustainability and environmental preservation. Previously, ISES has been held three times, in Calgary and Vancouver, Canada in 2009 and 2011 and Trondheim, Norway in 2013.

Prestigious dignitaries and experts in energy, environment and sustainability fields will speak at the ISES 2015, namely Dr. Rajendra Pachauri (Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader in the global climate policy debate), Jeffrey Sachs (professor of Economics from Columbia University) who has been voted as one of the world's influential people by Time, Heinz Kopetz (President of World Bioenergy Association), Sri Mulyani (Managing Director of the World Bank), Queen Rania Al-Abdullah (Queen of Jordan), and John Hofmeister (Chairman of Citizens for Affordable Energy). Other invitees are the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the OPEC Secretary General Abdalla Salem el-Badri.

In conducting the 2015 ISES, the student team from ITB is supported by Technical Advisory Board, which consists of professors in energy and environment fields, as well as High Level Advisory Board, which consists of executives of multinational energy companies and Indonesia's renowned experts in energy and environment sectors.

In determining the host for the ISES 2015, a bid was held, with more than 15 countries participated. The top nominees were including USA, Canada, Netherlands, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Romania, and Indonesia. Some of the top universities which took part in the bid were Carnegie Mellon University and Delft University of Technology.

"We are proud to be selected as host of the 2015 ISES. We are hoping that through this event, we are able to re-introduce the energy potential which Indonesia has to the world. As we are aware, Indonesia has plentiful energy resources, including geothermal, solar, coal, and bio fuel," said Prof. Ir. Tutuka Ariadji, M.Sc., Ph.D. ITB, an ITB professor, who is one of the members of the ISES 2015 Advisory Board. "However, as a developing nation, we face challenges to be able to exploit the energy sources due to lack of infrastructure. Moreover, we also need to address the energy sustainability and security issues. Technology is the key element to answer these challenges. We look forward to fruitful discussion which will take place at this event and the collaboration of young people to tackle the energy and environment sustainability issues," he added. A series of regional conferences are held simultaneously in Scotland, South Africa, United States and Mexico leading to the summit in Bali.

ISES has received recognition from the United Nation, through direct support from the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, during the 2013 ISES. Prominent experts on the field of energy, environment and sustainability have spoken at ISES events, including Vicente Fox, former President of Mexico, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader in the global climate policy debate, and Connie Hedegaard, EU Climate Commissioner.

About Student Energy

Student Energy is a grassroots initiative turned into a global movement by a group of driven, passionate students. It all began with a simple idea - to put on an energy conference "For students, by students." The vision was to have experts from all over the world come together with the ultimate goal of educating the leaders of tomorrow. A group of students at the University of Calgary took this vision and created the International Student Energy Summit (ISES). The inaugural ISES took place in Calgary, Canada in 2009. The event successfully brought together young minds from over 30 countries, a family of supportive partners, and energy experts from various disciplines.
