BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Outstanding achievements were once again attained by a group of Geodesy and Geomatical Engineering students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in a national competition. The Healing For Everyone team, consisting of Alfrida Insani Shabira, Muhammad Arsyad Nawawi, and Reza Akbar Ramadhan, successfully won 2nd place in Smart Innovation in Geospatial Mapping and Application (SIGMA) 2025. This competition was held by Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the Indonesian Association of Geophysicists at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) and brought together participants from various universities across Indonesia.

SIGMA 2025 is an event focused on the utilization of remote sensing to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the digital era. The final stage was conducted virtually on Saturday (22/2/2025). The Healing For Everyone team gave their best performance with this Geospatial and Machine Learning-based innovation.

In the competition, the Healing For Everyone Team presented a study titled “The Utilization of Remote Sensing to Identify Green Open Spaces as Green Healing Zons to Reduce Student Stress Levels in Bandung City using the Pressure State Response (PSR) Based on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Multi Layer Perceptron Models”.

This innovation aims to identify optimal green open spaces to reduce the number of burned-out students in Bandung City. This model integrates remote sensing data with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to determine areas with high potential as Green Healing Zones.

““Many students in Bandung experience stress due to academic pressure. We were inspired by personal experiences and found that spending time in nature helps to reduce stress levels. With a geospatial approach, we wanted to provide data-driven solutions to determine the best locations for students to unwind,” added Reza.

The main advantage of this study is its site suitability analysis approach, which is rarely applied in the context of students’ mental health. By utilising a combination of the Pressure State Response (PSR) framework and Machine Learning, this model can give a more accurate result in identifying areas fit for relaxation.

The team’s success in the competition is inseparable from the strategies they implemented. According to Reza, their main strategy was to choose a simple yet highly impactful idea.

“We deliberately chose a simple idea that had high urgency, due to the large number of stressed college students in Bandung. We also ensured that our paper was written clearly and in detail, and focused on efficient and engaging presentation,” stated Reza.

Other than that, their journey in this competition was full of challenges. Reza stated that initially, their team almost didn’t expect to qualify as they submitted their abstract close to the deadline. “Out of 117 registered teams, our team made it into the top 20 and proceeded to the next stage. After that, we entered the top 10 for the final presentation, and finally won 2nd place with the highest presentation score,” he explained.

Closing the discussion, Reza gave an inspiring message to other students who wish to participate in a similar competition. “Do not be afraid to try new things and make sure to avoid being stuck in a complex mindset. Sometimes, simple things can become extraordinary if we can maximize them,” he said.

With their proposed innovation, The Healing For Everyone team hopes that their research can contribute to the development of green healing zones as a stress-relieving place for students, as well as to support urban policies that prioritize mental health.
