BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — Interventions in education can improve the quality of life for the elderly, who are an unproductive age group. Therefore, the Smart Kiosk "KitaBelajar" exists as a form of Self-Service Technology (SST) to help the elderly with self-learning.
Smart Kiosk "KitaBelajar" was designed by Prof. Yassierli, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., CPE., together with two Industrial Engineering students, which was granted to Kasepuhan Raden Rahmat in Semarang Regency. The idea behind this design is based on the fact that the elderly group in Indonesia will make up 20% of the total population in 2045.
At Karsa Loka Vol. 29, Prof. Yassierli talked about "Elderly Smart Kiosk for Increasing the Elderly’s Quality of Life" on Friday, July 28, 2023. Prof. Yassierli is a professor from the Ergonomics, Work Engineering, and Work Safety Research Group, Faculty of Industrial Technology.
The Smart Kiosk "KitaBelajar" design is adjusted to the characteristics of the elderly based on ergonomic design principles. The capabilities and limitations of elderly people's physical, psychological, cognitive, and motor abilities serve as a measure of their character. This characteristic specification is used to differentiate the needs of the elderly from those of other user groups through a design process that looks out for the users, also known as User-Centered Design (UCD). Hopefully, Smart Kiosk will be able to become a comfortable learning facility for the elderly to pass their leisure time.
Prof. Yassierli explained, "From the anthropometry and dimension aspects, we have tried the most suitable design for them: height, viewing distance, font size, reachness, etc. How the modules will look—background colour, font, diction, and interaction in them—have been adjusted as well."
According to Prof. Yassierli, the characteristic differences between the elderly and other age groups become the biggest challenge in realising the smart kiosk design. Moreover, the elderly are unfamiliar with technology. This condition causes technology anxiety and may make the smart kiosk less desirable to them. Therefore, the system design of the Smart Kiosk "KitaBelajar" is directed towards the fun and interactive gamification concept in order to relieve the technology anxiety of the elderly.
Through gamification, the elderly’s learning activity is presented in a game concept with level and progress, daily challenge, and point reward. The collected points can be converted to a certain amount of charity by the user. This concept is expected to motivate the elderly to learn and perform religious services using the Smart Kiosk "KitaBelajar"
"Text and video combination in the gamification has been checked and tested, resulting in good user satisfaction and increased user engagement," Prof. Yassierli said.
Karsa Loka talk show is held to publish the latest collaboration result of the Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM ITB) and the Design Ethnography Laboratory of the Faculty of Arts and Design (FAD).
