BANDUNG, itb.ac.id—The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) successfully held a Workshop Series on Friday (13/8/2021). The Workshop Series took place on the National Technology Awakening Day and the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia. LPPM ITB invited Professor of the School of Life Science and Technology (SITH) Prof. Dr. Gede Suantika from Microbial Biotechnology Research Group as a speaker.

Prof. Gede Suantika shared his knowledge and experience, and he is also invited activists and aquaculture enthusiasts to discuss. Moreover, Prof. Gede has been interested in aquaculture for a long time since he completed his Ph.D. at Ghent University Belgium.

Together with LPPM ITB and SITH, Prof. Gede did a lot of research to realize his goal of creating a global and sustainable aquaculture industry. "I operate in a closed system. This means that the water used in culture is not replaced, and there is no waste," he said.

In his first research, Prof. Gede seeks to research functional microbes in regulating the nitrogen cycle of culture. Furthermore, he applied the basic science of biology in the form of biofiltration into physical engineering. Despite the local content and technology used, the hybridization of the system was successful in producing high-quality fish and shrimp.

Prof. Gede emphasized that the modern aquaculture industry needs to use locally available physical and biological components. In addition, the technology developed must also be able to accommodate social aspects. "Don't let workers in conventional industries end up being expelled," he said.

To close the event, Prof. Gede expressed his hope for young researchers to think institutionally. He wanted them to try to think about the results of scientific publications and their impact on society.
