BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), grouped as Team Maxwell, have successfully secured the first runner-up position in the International Petro Well Study Case Competition (IPW) 2024.

Team Maxwell comprises Astrinema Saragih, Jihan Syakinah Arifin, and Rizqy Wahyu Bachtiar from ITB’s Petroleum Engineering Department.

The International Petro Well Study Case Competition (IPW) 2024 is an annual event that brings together students from various petroleum-related disciplines across different universities. This competition hones their skills in analyzing case studies in petrophysics and well logging.
Participants were provided with logging and petrophysical data, which they had to analyze to obtain in-place estimates and develop a well development plan.

The main motivation for Team Maxwell to participate in this competition was its relevance to their field of study and as a capstone to their final year at ITB. In the competition, Team Maxwell introduced three main innovations:

  1. Rock Typing with Machine Learning: Utilizing machine learning technology to identify rock types based on logging data.
  2. Nanotechnology for Logging: Employing nanotechnology to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the logging process.
  3. Utilizing Depleted Reservoirs for CO2 Storage: Proposing the use of depleted reservoirs as CO2 storage sites, supporting environmentally friendly and sustainable energy initiatives.

The journey to victory was not easy. Team Maxwell began their preparation by leveraging their existing knowledge and conducting mentoring sessions with their lecturer, Ivan Kurnia.

Their first step was to understand and break down the given case. Following this, they conducted comprehensive analyses to achieve results aligned with the competition's objectives.

They then developed several innovations related to the case they were working on. Additionally, they actively engaged in discussions and exchanged ideas with lecturers, mentors, and friends, and extensively read papers or books related to geology to deepen their understanding.

Before the competition, they practiced their presentation with a timer and prepared a list of potential questions and answers that the judges might ask, ensuring they were ready and confident for the competition.

According to Team Maxwell, the key factors in their success were team cohesion, support from their lecturers and mentors (Mr. Ivan and Mr. Dedy), and their friends. They also emphasized the importance of divine blessings and parental approval.

Team Maxwell encourages other students to enthusiastically participate in similar competitions.

"Remember that in competitions like this, the most important thing is your understanding and how you deliver your knowledge during presentations and Q&A sessions," they advised. "Don't be afraid to try; this might be your path forward," said team member Astrinema Saragih.

With this victory, Team Maxwell not only brought honor to ITB on the international stage but also inspired other students to continue achieving and innovating.
