BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held a public lecture Studium Generale on Wednesday (12/10/16) at Aula Barat, Ganesha Campus, ITB. In this occasion, ITB invited Country Chairman and President Director of PT Shell Indonesia, Darwin Silalahi and the City Government of Bandung represented by Head of Department of Communication and Informatics, City Government of Bandung, Ahyani Raksanegara, to give additional insight to hundreds of participants coming from various classes and study programs. The Studium Generale was moderated by Head of Center for Energy Policy of ITB, Retno Gumilang Dewi and discussed clean and net zero emission future.
Emerging Net Zero Emission World
The lecture session began with President Director of PT Shell Indonesia discussing the future changes of energy. He explained that in the future, the world will move toward utilization of clean and zero-emission alternative energy. This could be realized if there are changes over energy consumption patterns of massive energy consumer sectors such as built environment, industry, transportation, and power generation. The decarbonizing of a country requires some factors, one of which is the geographical condition of the country. Countries with massive potency in new and renewable energy such as wind, water, and solar will decarbonize faster than countries with lesser mentioned potency. Moreover, countries with open-minded society toward nuclear energy also will decarbonize faster than countries whose society refuse nuclear energy as alternative energy resource.
Also, a way has been developed to reduce emission by using Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) method, in which ITB was appointed as Center for Developing Excellence of CCS in Indonesia. This technology captures carbon and injects them to reservoir rocks so that the carbon is not released to air. Not only giving good impact to the environment, CCS method could also be applied to enhance oil recovery if injected to crude oil reservoir.
The second session was carried out with a discussion about Bandung Smart City by Ahyani Raksanagara. She explained that Bandung is currently building Smart City supported with website and e-governance apps where people can get updated with programs and activities enacted by the government. The government also provides mobile tax car, mobile consultation car, and other innovations.
