CMM is one of the programs initiated by Technopreneur Division from ITB Mechanical Engineering Students Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Mesin, HMM). Formed in 2004, it was first known as Creative Mechanical Manufacturing. This entity is also available for consulting, beside its main purpose to manufacture mechanical tools in some projects. Recently in 2013, this entity decided to change its name to Creative Mechanical Manufacturing. "This new branding is intended to make people realize that we're not only capable for consulting, but also for manufacturing products that can solve people's mechanical problems by their own request," explained Ignatius Richard, The Head of CMM.
According to Richard, besides helping people to solve mechanical problems, CMM was also formed as a place to develop students' entrepreneurship skills. The deepening of entrepreneurship skills is done by being an engineer-based worker and project leader, which of course done by implementing mechanical knowledge gained in their studies. The implementation of mechanical knowledge is also associated with technologies, because this works has to solve the needs of their customers by their request.
Most of the projects handled by CMM mainly come from university area in making props for competitions, or prototypes for thesis. Aside from university area, CMM is also able to make several particular devices by request, either prototypes for hobbies or a product used for production line in some factories. "We once made a train prototype, a headset made of wood, and some other products which were requested for hobbies," said Richard.
Handling State-Owned Enterprise Projects
"The biggest project we've ever had until now is a project from PT Lembaga Elektronika Nasional (LEN) Industri," Richard continued. Richard said that PT LEN Industri is a state-owned enterprise majoring in the production of broadcasting devices, telecommunication infrastructures, electronic defenses, and other areas. CMM helped to manufacture a surveillance camera with 3 axis. This surveillance camera can produce a bird view with 360 degrees point of view, and was showed in Indo Defense and Aerospace Exhibition in 2012.
Currently, CMM is working on another state-owned enterprise by one of research and development institutions under Agency for Quality Assessment of Climate Policy and Industrial Ministry of Republic Indonesia, Center for Material and Technical Products. CMM is working together with this institution in developing a laboratory for CNG gas tube testing, by manufacturing a valve and grad testing device in tubes. "We make a quality testing device to standardize the valve and grad in the tubes with appropriate ISO," explained Richard.
Richard hopes that the presence of CMM can motivate people who have basic mechanical skills to develop business entities related to technologies. According to him, there are a lot of projects which are related in mechanical areas nowadays. Unfortunately, most of the mechanical products are still imported from overseas. "Hopefully, mechanical projects held in Indonesia can be organized by our own people someday," said Richard.
