BANDUNG, itb.ac.id — Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) hosted a sharing session with Martin Towns, Vice President of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), in the Multipurpose Hall CRCS on Friday (15/09/2023). The primary topic of the seminar was “Creating CCS-enabled Decarbonized Industrial Hubs,” focusing on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and its developments in Indonesia.

During the session, it was discussed that many countries worldwide, including Indonesia, are actively working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. In response, CCUS power plants and technology have been developed to address the issue. This initiative spans across Indonesia, from Aceh to Papua, concentrating on capturing and utilizing CO2 to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE).

Martin Towns then delved into various aspects of CCUS technology, emphasizing the importance of the CCUS value chain and technology related to CO2 capture, transportation, storage, and usage. He highlighted that CCS technology provides an effective solution with a more cost-efficient approach.

CCS enables key sectors such as industry, energy, and hydrogen production to achieve low carbon emissions. With the right infrastructure, CCS can play a pivotal role in creating a more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy landscape.

Additionally, the event underscored the importance of collective cooperation in addressing climate change by reducing carbon emissions. CCUS emerged as an effective solution to reduce emissions across diverse industrial sectors, showcasing significant potential for the future.

The development of CCUS in the United States of America, Japan, Australia, and Indonesia reflects a global commitment to addressing climate change resulting from greenhouse gas emissions. The project's potentials, strengths, and opportunities are expected to contribute significantly to decreasing carbon footprints on Earth.

Martin Towns believes that market demands for low carbon products will continue to rise, benefiting communities, while products with higher gas emissions will gradually decline. This underlines that sustainable energy with lower carbon emissions is a crucial innovation that deserves attention.

Through this sharing session, ITB reaffirms its commitment to supporting innovation and proposing solutions that yield positive outcomes for both the community and the environment. ITB is eager to participate in the development of CCUS technology in Indonesia to contribute to a world with zero carbon emissions.
