Bandung, itb.ac.id – Muhammad Al Kahfi, one of ITB graduates, should be proud. He graduated as the highest GPA holder in this April’s batch of ITB’s graduation ceremony with 3.96/4.00 GPA. This glorious achievement is not actually his first time. Kahfi has gained so many achievements when he was a student in ITB.

Kahfi loves mathematics. His prime achievement was being a finalist in math category in National Science Olympiad held by Pertamina during his freshman year, although this is not really his first time either. He participated in Mathematics Olympiad in 4th grade of elementary school. When he was a senior high school student of SMAN 1 Padang Panjang, Kahfi won his first gold medal in National Science Olympiad 2012. Kahfi loves mathematics since kindergarten, he stood out amongst other students because he could solve mathematical problem meant for elementary school level.

The Padang Panjang born man had also participated in National Mathematics and Science Olympiad for University Students (ON MIPA) held by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education and got a gold medal and titled as “Absolute Winner”. This title then brought him to be an Indonesian delegate to participate in International Math Challenge for University 2015 in Bulgaria. Again, he won gold medal in this competition.

In 2016, Kahfi and his team participated in Calculus World Cup held in Taiwan. This time, he got third place. For these consecutive achievements, Kahfi is honored as The Most Outstanding Student in 2017. He then represented ITB to participate for The Most Outstanding Student in national level and got the third place.

Kahfi started to work on his thesis in his third year, while most students start theirs in the fourth year. Even though Kahfi changed his theme of thesis from researching about Pure Mathematics to Applied Mathematics in Finance, he could finally finish his thesis entitled “The Price of One and Two Asset Bars by Using the Reflection Principle” under Prof. Marcus Wono Setya Budi’s supervision. He did his thesis defense in January 2018 and got his degree for his superb thesis that can give mathematical solution to minimize the risk of loss in stock market with applying reflection principal.

During Kahfi’s student days, there is much to his sorrow. At first, it was hard to adapt himself as a migrant from Sumatera to live in Bandung. But all of his achievements, whether winning medals or getting good GPA, were special challenges for Kahfi. He admits that he got it because of working hard, and also parents’ and friends’ endless support.

“This isn’t the end of our journey. This graduation is the start for our real journey. Whatever our job is, whatever our dream is, I wish we could give benefit to the community and to be the pride of our alma mater,” said Kahfi when he delivered his valedictorian speech. He also said that as the alumni of ITB, not only intellectual quality that must be shown, but also good morale integrity so they can be an example wherever they are.
